Which Lightweight Double Pushchair Should You Buy?

A lightweight double pushchair makes it simple to get around, particularly if you have children of different age groups. They're generally easy to fold, steer and carry up and down stairs.

They come with an adjustable recline for both seats, a large canopy, and padded 5-point safety harnesses. They are also simple to maneuver despite their bigger footprint. They are ideal for parents who are worried about fitting through doors.

The Cybex Duet pushchair is unique because it features a unique frame that expands in width to allow for another child seat. This makes it lighter than other pushchairs that are side-by-side. It can fit through doors of standard size and is easy to maneuver in public transport. Tandem

While side-byside models are more suitable for siblings with similar age, tandem lightweight double strollers have distinct appeals. Some can fit a larger car seat and others have Reversible seats. Others even have an extra carrycot or a convertible seat in the middle. They tend to be more spacious and easier to access and exit from, although their baskets tend to be smaller than those on single buggies. Many have larger canopies with windows that peek out and cushioned leg cushions.

The iCandy Peach is another example of a good-value lightweight tandem. The fabric is a bit less luxurious than those of some of our top-rated doubles. However, it looks stunning and is easy to use. One of the most impressive aspects about it is its single-handed fold - although it will require some practice, Kirstie in our Lab declared it to be "genius". It can't be folded with the carrycot attached, however, the mechanism for attaching and removing it is simple and quick.

Tandem strollers that are lightweight usually make tighter turning than side-by-side models. However, they can be more difficult to navigate on uneven surfaces and curbs. They are also slower to accelerate and more heavy to move. This can put strain on your back.

A convertible double buggy is another option. It is initially a single, but you can add adapters to convert it into a double. It can also have an additional seat, a carrycot or both in the front. Or the children can be seated together. Some can also consider adding a buggyboard, which assists an older child to keep pace with a younger brother or sister.

We loved the way this iCandy model folds into itself with a one-handed mechanism that's really simple to master. Although it's heavier than other pushchairs that are single-to-double in this review, our home tester Karolina claimed that it is very maneuverable, even when she had two toddlers and a carrycot.

You can buy add-ons such as the Roma Gemini Carrycots (PS100) which are great for babies. Our test panel found the seats to be comfortable for toddlers, with good lumbar support and headrests. There are many options to recline the seats with the front seat adjustable in various positions and the back seat having the option of recline.

The biggest drawback with this type of buggy is that it's generally wider overall than side-by-side doubles which makes it more difficult to navigate through doorways and can be tricky to manoeuvre up and down kerbs. The wheels and suspension of these strollers tend to be able to deal with pavements. They're also lighter than most side-by-sides, so you can still get a lot of storage. It's worth bearing in mind that strollers of this type aren't as efficient in navigating narrow aisles in supermarkets, and may struggle to handle a lot of shopping. It's easier to turn them around even on the smallest of curving paths but even this can be a challenge. Some are also easier to turn than others, such as the Thule Urban Glide 2 Double and the Baby Trend Sit N' Stand Double, for instance.

Convertible

The best thing about convertible double pushchairs is the ability to adapt to the changing family requirements. They are typically single buggies, and include adapters that permit you to include a second child's seat, a carrycot, or (in certain instances) the car seat to the frame. Some even convert to a single buggie when your child gets older and starts to walk more or wants to ride on buggy boards.

It has a distinctive steering handlebar, front and rear suspensions to smooth rough terrain and an ultra-compact fold that can stand on its own with straps to make it easy to transport and seven-inch front wheels with swivel locks and ten-inch back wheels with suspensions to ensure an easier ride. The only drawback is that you'll need to purchase an additional car seat or baby carrier.

This multi-functional tandem is a popular choice by our home testers due to its maneuverability and large shopping basket that is accessible with both seats in the parent-facing position. Its lightweight weight (about the same as a few single pushchairs) makes it a breeze to maneuver. Reversible seats mean they can be switched to face either way, and the clever method by which it can attach an additional seat or riding board to the rear is appreciated by many. Parents also appreciated that it accommodates car seats and infant carriers from various brands. This includes those that aren't normally compatible with other double buggy that converts to single buggies.
