Similar to other iRobots that are premium (including the most powerful model) they utilize smart mapping to produce precise floorplans and avoid household obstacles like cords and furniture legs. They also come with a feature called carpet boost that boosts the robot's performance when it sees an abundance of dirt on the carpet in order to get it clean quickly.

The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored excellently in our tests of floors with no carpet They are also adept in removing dog hair. However, they have a few flaws that keep them from being our top choice. One of the flaws of the Q5 is that its navigation system does not feature AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's also prone to get stuck on shoes and socks and couldn't navigate densely packed rooms very well during our tests. Also, it doesn't have a camera that would let it see the corners of the room.

However, it's a good choice, especially if you want to save money on an iRobot Roomba and you have a bare-floored home or office. It's also quiet and can be used when you're at work or at school. The only thing it doesn't have that you can't find in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on bare floors. And it's less effective at mopping, as it relies on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on for long and don't deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 is self-emptying cradle however. If you're required to mop, the mopping pad can be changed for one that is wet in just a few seconds.

2. IRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive mopping and vacuuming into an elegant, compact package. Its intelligent cleaning maps as well as fluid navigation make it simple to clean, and effective in tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also features a powerful suction and a self-emptying bin. It's the best robot hoover for carpets, although it isn't as efficient as some of its competitors in deep cleaning.

This top-performing combination vacuum and mop uses advanced sensor technology to avoid obstacles and pet waste, and it learns your home's layout over time for more efficient cleaning. You can change its cleaning schedule and set up zones using the app that is well-designed. Its battery life is average in comparison to other models.

When the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted space, you can tell it to remove and extend its mop. This will help prevent cross-contamination. Its flex arm is also great for getting under furniture that is low and along baseboards. However, it doesn't have the same washboard performance as our other Editors' Choice picks, the Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo N8 Pro+ as well as the iRobot Combo j9+.

During tests, X30 Ultra was the quickest robot vacuum/mop that could complete the task of cleaning a whole home, with 66 per cent of its battery remaining. It did a decent cleaning job on different floors and rooms with different flooring types, including some area rugs. Its obstacle detection was top-notch and it swiftly eluded fake dog socks, turds, shoes and cables.

It's a little more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however, it comes with superior suction, a built-in dust bin that automatically empties into its base, and supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can also clean the floor even after it vacuums. This is a feature we haven't seen in other robot vacuum/mop combination.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

With a sleek circular design that appears like a regular Roomba rather than the compact models this robot vacuum and mop combo is one of the most attractive designs in our reviews. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also its smartest. It features advanced features such as Enhanced Dirt Detection and future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads on its own).

It's the only robotic vacuum/mop to score an exemplary 10/10 in our testing, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors, which include a camera, structured light system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that can fully self-refill and empty its base station and boasts an its own self-cleaning mop pads.

As with other iRobot models as well, the X40 is easy to use, offering an intuitive mobile app interface and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant. The only drawback is that it's still quite a noisy unit that could be an issue if you use it in the morning before work or at night as you try to fall asleep.

It's also a bit expensive, though it's not as expensive as the Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra, both of which are equally capable and better-looking. This is a dual-purpose vacuum that's extremely powerful, but it's more expensive and make more noise.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with many advanced features that will let you get rid of your chores. Like Ecovacs the range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that takes care of both mopping and vacuuming, with a multifunction dock that automatically empty the automatic vacuum and mop robot's dustbin, refills its water tank, cleans and dry its mop pads.

The smart robot uses a combination of LIDAR and structured light to map out the floor plan and detect obstacles, making it more efficient than some of its premium rivals. It also comes with a front-mounted camera to detect hazards in real-time but this was not 100% foolproof during our tests and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum cleaner has an maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to complete the task. It also has a feature known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the vacuum's power and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the home based on how dirty those areas tend to be.

For bigger homes it's worth looking for models with zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot to clean a particular area of your house via the app or via voice commands. A stair mode can be useful if you have a large furniture. Additionally, a recharge and resume function that lets your robot vacuum continue where it left off is ideal for busy families.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a smarter cleaner than you might imagine from its price. It vacuums well, picking up 55% debris in our tests. (It was only second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses with a single pad that uses a reciprocating motion, which cleans better than most of the other robot mop cleaners we've examined. And it's highly self-sufficient with a full-featured app and a self-emptying, washable base.

The well-designed iRobot app guides you through a mapping exercise that collects information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you set on the map. You can use it to create cleaning schedules, arrange a spot clean or to prioritize your most filthy rooms for better performance. The app comes with a variety of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom mapping and advanced cleaning settings.

It can also reach corners and under furniture better because its shape is more rectangular. It is equipped with an impressive 8000 Pascal suction as well as sophisticated combs that remove pet hair. It also has the ability to set up a spot clean that thoroughly cleans a particular area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a more sleek and less expensive alternative to the iRobot Roomba. It has a more attractive, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras appear like cute eyes. It does a good job vacuuming but is more prone to get caught on low thresholds and is noisier than the other top robotic vacuums we've examined.
