Buying a Double Buggy From Birth

When it comes to choosing the ideal double buggy, there are many things to consider. We spoke with Fourth Trimester postnatal retreat expert Katie Billingsley for her advice on everything from seating options to age ranges to folding mechanisms and storage space.

What type of buggy would you like?

Double buggys are ideal for transporting two children at the same time, even if they are not the same age. They can also be used as prams, and they have a reclining mechanism within each seat, allowing your children can sit or lie down in various positions. They also come with plenty of storage space to store everything from snacks and drinks to nappies and wipes. Often they're lightweight, easy to fold and small enough to fit into the car boot. If you travel a lot amount, it's essential to check that the buggy can be easily moved with the wheels folded in your car boot, and then removed.

You may have seen this type of double buggy on other mothers strollers, or even in one as a child. They are perfect for twins or older siblings who want to keep up with you. They are also able to handle uneven surfaces. Some come with a built-in ride-on board for older children and 'cinema seats'.

Do you have twins?

If your children are twins or siblings of different age groups, a double buggie is the most efficient way to transport them around. There are two main types of double buggy - side-by-side buggies in which your children sit in a row, side-by-side or tandem buggies where one baby is above the other. Both buggies can accommodate two seats fixed. However, side-by-side buggies are narrower to fit through doors. Tandems tend to be wider in general. They can also accommodate both seats for toddlers and a carrycot.

Do you have one?

A younger sibling can feel like a big responsibility at first, especially when you need to be attentive to the baby. A double buggy can also allow them to feel a sense of belonging if you place them in an infant carrier and push the older child.
